CMV is a ubiquitous virus with no long term health effects for most people, but its effects on the developing fetus can be severe. CMV is the most common congenital infection in the United States, and the leading infectious cause of developmental disabilities and of non-genetic sensorineural hearing loss in childhood. Yet studies show that many healthcare providers are not familiar with cCMV or might feel uncomfortable discussing cCMV with their patients. This module is meant to be a resource for clinicians in any field to refresh their knowledge of cCMV and to develop strategies for engaging in conversations with their patients – which could range from risk reduction to care and support for affected children and their families. Learners will practice these skills though interactive case-based learning.
